Why AWD Reduces Fuel Economy

Four factors reduce fuel economy in AWD and 4WD vehicles versus equivalent 2WD versions:

  1. Additional weight: An AWD system adds approximately 100 to 200 lbs (rear differential, driveshaft, center coupling). A 4WD transfer case setup adds 250 to 400 lbs. More weight requires more fuel to accelerate.
