There are a lot of names out there for various brands of traction systems:
- Quattro from Audi
- 4Matic from Mercedes
- Symmetrical AWD from Subaru
- 4Motion from Volkswagen
- SH-AWD from Acura
- …and so on
What the brand names and product brochures don’t always tell us though is how the product will perform for us on an everyday basis. Will it get you up the icy driveway mid-way through January? That kind of thing.
Probably the best way to find answers to those kind of questions is to gather a fleet of test vehicles in mid-January and take each one for a slippery run up your driveway. That’s usually not an option for most of us so we have to settle for reading reviews or product brochures.
There is the possibility of performing laboratory type tests though. They aren’t perfect real world examples of how we can expect our chosen vehicle to perform but they are several steps above reading brochures.
With that in mind I came across this interesting video comparing Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system with the systems from Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen. I’m not here to promote Subaru above all the others but it is a cool test to take a look at. Check it out and see what you think:
